As for your writing - and your novel - if you feel like you're not ready, then it'll never work if you try to write from that place, so good decision to postpone. As long as you keep going and practice, though, as you said - short stories, novellas etc.

One of the best things you can do for yourself is find the top sellers and read lots of reviews. Read the 5-stars and the 1-stars. This will help you figure out what readers love and hate.

Also read read read the genre(s) you plan to write in - and then read some more.

When you're ready to publish, I'll be happy to share a load of info on that topic - if you want it - also on how to make sales.
