I agree completely. I respect the fact that some people want to be referred to in the plural, and if someone specifically asks me to say “they” I’ll do my best to remember.

But I do NOT understand why now they whole world is supposed to change how we speak in general terms. Eg if I’m writing, I’m now worried if I write he/she that I’ll get slammed for inadvertently offending someone. I can’t tell Jewish jokes even though I’m (not practicing) Jewish. I’m afraid to open my mouth because there are so many groups that demand we all acknowledge them all the time.

It’s got so bad that those of us who don’t fall into those groups are now experiencing discrimination. We’re being silenced. We’re being told what we must and must not say.

Whatever happened to people accepting each other and getting that we’re all just doing our best? Do I really deserve to be berated if I write “he or she” and some non-binary person reads it and feels personally attacked?!

Jeez Louise how far is this going to go? What about tolerance? What about not expecting the rest of the world to bend over backwards to the point that their own freedoms are being jeopardized?

Personally, I’m fed up with hearing about pronouns. I refuse to put mine anywhere. I’ll do my best to respect anyone in my world who has made me aware of their preference. Beyond that, I’m not turning myself inside out for people who will rip my head off for an inadvertent offence, and thereby not reciprocating my attempts to be respectful.
