I wish I knew, Debra, although I was interviewed about Jacob recently for a true crime podcast and the host asked me if I had any idea why Jacob had done this. I said I didn’t know. Then he asked me if anyone were to ask Jacob that question, did I think he would really and truly be able to answer?

In that moment, it occurred to me that he probably did not. I’m sure he doesn’t really understand why he went down this path. Or how he ended up killing a man.

Somehow, that feels even worse than if he had a reason.
