Thank you, Nanie. I didn't feel fear in England; there wasn't anything scary going on toward immigrants. It was just that I was often treated differently, especially when I opened my mouth and they thought I was American and would be nasty until I said I was Canadian.
Some people were downright rude, insulting or belittling me for using Canadian words and "correcting me" with the proper English one.
There were many people who were kind and it wasn't a problem - but I noticed they're very much "out of sight, out of mind" there, whereas here, people are a LOT more friendly and welcoming. In England, it felt like if you didn't go to school with someone, you would never really be a proper friend and they'd just be polite and treat me like an acquaintance.
I really hope and pray things settle down in Ireland, Nanie. I'd be concerned, too, if I were in your shoes. 💜
