Thanks for this. You make many valid points. I am crazy busy, too, and prefer shorter reads, but sometimes I'm happy to dive in for a longer one if it's really compelling. I've got two ridiculously long pieces here and both have had people read all the way through (17 and 20 minutes!) - but it's because of the content and they love it.
Of course, that's not for everyone. Personally, I enjoy a substantial read, so at times am happy with longer ones. I've enjoyed 10+ minute reads that are gripping and interesting. I've also left 3-5-minute reads by writers who are obviously trying to stretch it out and don't have anything really meaningful to say.
At other times, I'm trying to spread out my available read time so I'm happier with short ones. Maybe it's the Pisces in me - changeable and fluid! I go with the flow! LOL! I like variety - so that's what I offer, too.
I vary my article lengths so there's something for everyone. Sometimes a piece needs more time, others can be short and punchy, make my point and get out! :) I'm planning to do a lot of short form now, have just started on the 150-word mission - a one-minute read. They're fun!
But I have plenty of others from 2-8 minutes long.
What I really love is what you said about connecting with your readers. Same here - I am seriously loving the community here, and being able to have chats with people who are reading my work, or whose work I'm reading. Such a joy!
And I'm so glad I've met you! Thank you for a terrific artile - again :)
