Thanks for this! The British aren’t the only ones that say these things. I heard the same statements in Canada during my many years there. And I’ve heard Americans say the same.

The “real character” one, though, that’s usually more a term of endearment or even a compliment across the pond. It means we appreciate and acknowledge that someone is unique, funny, the life of the party.

One very British way to insult and make it sound like a sweet thought it by adding, “bless him/her” at the end! “He’s not the sharpest knife in the drawer” sounds a bit harsh till you smile sweetly, soften your tone and add “bless him!” Or just “bless!”
