They sure need to do something differently! I'd love to see their income and expenses. They have OVER 1 million members, between $50 and $150 per year per member, let's average it at $100 - that's $100,000,000. Minus taxes of course, but they also get business deductions and staff salaries.

I was told they've closed their physical office so if that's true, they aren't even paying for that anymore.

They've all but shut down boosts in the last 6 months so they're not bleeding from that program.

Even if they had 20 paid staff at $300K a year, that's $6 million. Throw in some extra just to round it up with those excessive benefits - let's say they spend $10-15 million on payroll. There's still a heck of a pile of money - and AFTER they hit 1 million members, they opened up to 77 more countries, so who knows exactly how many more members there are??

From what I know from a few people in those countries, they get paid WAY less than those of us who were here before that. And I'm guessing it's because they're in countries with a much lower cost of living. So Medium actually gets to keep way more of those people's membership money. People speculate that those newer countries are the reason for the reduced available money, but it actually has increased the pot!

Something is really rotten here. I wish my FoM didn't go to September. I hate having that meaningless badge on my profile. People are so NOT being paid four times more for my reads and Medium is sure no friend to me or to those writers I'm reading.
