This is a tricky thing. As a self-published author, I’ve learned that America is the world’s largest consumer market. I’m Canadian and British, but my years of self-publishing have taught me that it doesn’t matter what books are selling for in Canada or the UK. it matters what they’ll sell for in the US.

So when we sell on Amazon, the USD price translates into an expensive book in the UK. While I lived in England, I was stunned by how inexpensive books are (new) compared to here in Canada (understated).

I also know that if we don’t sell at what is considered a competitive price, ie too low, readers think it’s crap and they don’t buy. Same with services. If a therapist charges half what all the others do, I wouldn’t go. Or mechanic. Or lawyer. I’d think they mustn’t be any good. It’s just the way people are. Generally, of course. And when pricing anything for the public, we must go with generalities.
