Well, call me old school but over the decades, I've watched parents give away more and more power to their children and generally speaking, I don't think it's doing anyone much good. Certainly, there needed to be change from when I was a kid and spankings were the norm for everyone and kids should be seen and not heard, blah blah blah. Children are still people who deserve respect and compassion.

However, in some ways parents have gone too far in allowing children to make too many decisions and it's not good for them. Kids need to feel a strong sense of boundaries and security, and they aren't capable of having too much control or calling too many of the shots.

I don't think there's anything wrong in saying, damn it, you're having your picture taken and that's that.

And THIS from someone who absolutely detested it as a kid - but I survived. I remember not liking having my picture taken - at all - and I still don't like it!! Lots of people don't! But I'm glad my parents made me do it anyway.

We all have to do things we don't like. Consider this as part of that training for your children. Life isn't always going to be able to respect everything they wish they could have or do. If an employer wants a group photo or your child is in a sports team and they want a team shot, then what?

Sometimes we just have to suck it up and do things we don't like. Having one's picture taken when it's uncomfortable is a great place to practice learning how to do that :)
