Later that morning, there were a few people ahead of Robert at the post office as he waited to send a telegram to Sandy. Nervously pacing back and forth a few steps in his place in the line-up, he was still puzzling over the bizarre events just a short time earlier at his apartment. And the peculiarity of the door opening as usual when he had finally got brave enough to try it one last time.
It could have been 20 bloody minutes earlier. Then I wouldn’t have missed my damn bus.
Bitter about not leaving for Nashville that day after packing everything up, Robert shook his head.
At least the landlady said she hadn’t rented his room yet so he could stay a few more days if necessary. And he wasn’t due to start work until the beginning of the following week. But his sister would be disappointed by the delay as they hadn’t seen each other in quite some time.
What do I say? ‘Sorry I missed the bus, but my apartment wouldn’t let me out?’
