The lasagna was heartwarmingly delicious, the salad crisp and fresh. And the wine softened the glow of the most beautiful night either of them could remember having in quite some time.

Partway through the evening, Lucy had to spill the beans.

“I made a call today,” she said, hesitantly.

“Oh?” Robert asked, eyebrows raised.

“Yes. Uh — ” she paused. Taking a deep breath, she went on. “I don’t mean to tell you your business, but…I mean…well, earlier, you mentioned about not having a job here, and — ”

He sat up straight, eyes wide and his heart skipping a beat. “And…?” he asked with interest.

“I told you that I could ask at the hospital for you, which I did, and they said they’d be happy to make room for you. That was after they checked up on you, of course,” she grinned. “Apparently, they heard only glowing comments about every aspect of your work and who you are as a person. You left quite an impression,” she added, taking another forkful of lasagna.
